Tioga Pass opening date - any guesses?

A friend of mine is planning her wedding for June 14th, just down the road from Tioga Pass Entrance (near Bennettville Campground, off Saddlebag Lake Road, off Hwy 120). Who thinks the pass will be open by then? Anyone know how much snow T Meadows currently has? I think it would be interesting to see when everyone thinks the pass will open...

Some interesting historic info on opening and closing dates here, to help your hypothesizing:
http://www.monobasinresearch.org/data/tiogapass.htm

My optomistic guess is May 31st. ; )

Yosemite Valley Current Conditions May 12, 2008

Moonbow Camp just returned from a weekend camping trip to Valley, Upper Pines Campground, May 8th thru 12th. The Valley is just starting to Bloom with alot of the green grasses and Dogwood flowers starting to open.
There was a small sprinkle of snow in the shadows, but overall warm days on the bottom of the valley, about 50 at night and 80 during the day. Mist Trail was open and pleasant moderate hike, but the cables were down on Halfdome, but should open up soon. The Water falls were at 85%, but most of the valley seemed really dry this year.
Expect alot of people, it was very crowded in Curry Village and Yosemite Village, and on the buses. I've been going for several years at this time of year, but this is the first time i've seen alot of visitors this early. I expect it to get really packed this summer.
There were bear warnings in the campgrounds, but we only saw coyotes and deer running thru them. Also not many squirrels either.
We had a fun time and looking forward to next years trip.
See you at Lightning in a Bottle on the 23rd.

Tent Camping Sept thru Oct.

How is the tent camping in the valley between Sept thru Oct? I was thinking the crowds would thin out about that time. What about early Nov? I imagine it's just too cold after that?

If there is no availability in Camp 4 when I arrive, what is a good fall-back plan?

I know the valley will probably be dry, and not nearly as beautiful as late spring or early summer, but I just want to get away from the urban ugh and enjoy nature for a bit. All tips appreciated.

I'm interested in doing some camping in Yosemite in late spring or early summer.
Which campgrounds would you recommend, and why?. I plan to stay for several days, so anything with
good access to trails, showers, and bathrooms would be nice. But perhaps I would like to do some overnight hikes
and stay in the more secluded camp areas too.

Hi all,

Question This year I want to do the Tuolumne River Trail from Tuolumne Meadows to maybe White Wolf. But I am considering coming back through the Tens Lakes Basin. Have any of you ever done it? Know of any web sites where people have logged it?

Also I used to have a CD (Topo) with interactive maps of Yosemite and of course I can’t find it This one was just for Yosemite… I can’t find them anywhere… Did they do away with that stuff? Are there maps online that I am missing where I can plan my hike printing out daily maps and miles?

Thanks all!
Phil

PS Of course you are all invited!

Hi,
Wondering if any of you have advice on camping up past Vernal Falls in late Spring. I'm a fairly inexperienced camper with lots of experience hiking and running.
I'd like to go up into the area above the falls .

Can you park in the valley floor for a few days/week and pack everything up the trail?
Any thoughts for a first timer that far out?

Are trails accessible when there is snow on them or does the park close them? I've snowshoed in the Sequoia Nat'l Park but wonder about Yosemite since there are more tourists there.

Hello everyone. My wife and I are planning on going to Yosemite this summer and would like to hear some recommendaitons. Our criteria is: stay in a hotel or B+B; stay for 2-3 nights. Any good hotels to stay? What is the one thing we have to do when we're there?

Thanks in advance.

Free snowshoes are provided by Tubbs and each night there is great live music. More information can be found at www.evergreenlodge.com/winterfest

Yosemite - Fall colors?

I am planning to head into Yosemite this coming weekend, 8-9 in hopes of seeing and photographing some of the fall colors. As fast as all the colors are changing around here Im wondering if I may too late to catch them in Tuolumne Meadows because of the higher elevation - has anyone been there in the last week or so? How about the valley itself?
Thanks, Daniel.

question about bears and food storage boxes

I'm taking my family to Yosemite this week. None of us have ever been. I know that we will need to store our food in the bear-resistant storage bins and I am trying to be conservative in terms of how much food to bring because I know there is limited space. However, my uncle and his family are also meeting us there, and I get the impression that he's gonna be bringing a ton of food. There are 6 of us in the campsite for 3 days. Can we rent an extra bear-proof container if we need to? I have heard rumors that extra bear boxes are available for rent but I'd like to verify before I get out there. Also, do bears drink beer? I have a case of bottled beer I'd like to bring but there may not be room for it in the storage bin. Camping w/o beer would be preposterous! Anyone know about this?

Went up to Mirror Lake yesterday and it was unbelievable-it's always 'best' after a few days rain. The upper lake was full and smooth as glass while the lower lake was quite active and the tributary FULL of water. The deer are abundant, as are the dogwoods in bloom.

I downloaded a few photos on the Tribe site.

I posted a few pics of the 'lone' apple tree located on the edge of the Ahwahnee meadow near the homes on the west side.

I shot them on 4/26/05, and glad I did as the rain has beat the blooms to death.

Has anyone been through Wawona lately? I'm wondering how high the Merced river is this time of year. I want to do some fly fishing in that area if the water's not too high or fast.

Any reports would be welcome. Thanks

Hi ya'll

I posted the following message in "Bay Area Hikers" If you're interested in what we are doing, go to that tribe and check it out. Please don't respond here as I would like to keep the reponses consolidated.

Just joined this tribe and I'm psyched! I moved to the Bay Area fall of last year, and now that Spring is here and Summer is around the corner, I'm getting super antsy to hit the trail. I've met all kinds of cool people, people that like hiking and the outdoors, but nobody that's too interested or prepared for a multi-day wilderness trip. I once worked in the Yosemite wilderness for summmer, so I know the area well. In general, the Sierra is my favorite area to go to, Sequoia might be my favorite, especially the east side.

Anyway, I'm thinking there are at least a few people like me that are looking to enjoy dark starry heavens, gorgeous mountain vistas, forests, waterfalls, etc. and meet some awesome people in the process. So, I'd like to organize a mixer for us folks to get together. I notied that pyrokitten organized something like this a year ago, and it was at the pacficcoast brewery in downtown Oakland.
Seems like a good central spot unless everybody that responds is in SF.
See www.pacificcoastbrewing.com/map.htm

I'm thinking the week of May 8. I'm not antcipating too many responses so, but after I get a few, I'll pick the day and time that is best for the most people.

I also know that if we do get together it'll be hard for people to agree on a time and place to go backpacking, so try to come with flexibility in mind. Maybe if there are enough people, we'll form a few trips.
you can email me at jdmarcus@gmail.com

ciao,
josh

Hey there!

I'm new to this tribe and I've NEVER been to Yosemite! Yeah, I know, its completely ridiculous. Anyway, I finally got it together made camping reservations for 3 nights in June. We are staying in Hodgedon Meadows but are prepared to drive around to check out the sites.

I am taking my mother with me and would lurve some suggestions regarding cool day hikes. My mom is 55 and in decent shape, but I have to be reasonable in terms of what I can expect from her physically. I'm sure we'll head into Yosemite Valley but what other beautiful sites should I make sure to visit? Avoiding the mad crowds is preferred but not necessary.

Thanks much!!
T meadows- Glen Aulin Trip 7-4

There wasnt much planning into my latest trip to Yosemite however it turned out to be one of the most spectacular hikes I have ever done, amazing.... I was able to get a wilderness permit to stay at Glen Aulin, one of the high sierra camps north of highway 120. The hike followed the Tuolumne River west from the meadows down the canyon to the Glen Aulin area. With countless waterfalls, spectacular veiws of the Cathedral Mountian Range and lots of wildflowers made this a great 6 miles. 2 hours later I realized I was changeing film, for the second time. On day two I hiked down towards the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne with over 1000' of elevation loss and many more awesome waterfalls as the river roared its way down the canyon over and around building sized boulders surounded by 1000' granite walls on each side. I ran out of film at this point - 5 rolls, so will have some photos to post soon. Climbed back to Glen Aulin.
Day 3 I hiked back out to Tenaya lake via the Murphey cr trail wich was quite simply a great walk through the woods, although the mosquito's were pretty bad it was a nice 7 miles back to the highway. Within 30 minutes I was able to catch a shuttle back to my vehicle. I recomend this hike for anyone who has a couple days they can go, especially while the river is still running fairly high. Sorry if my descriptions are vague at all, its hard to describe the country I was in, but this was definetly the best hike Ive ever done.

Another season comes to a close-

Driving into the Park last sunday via the east entrance as the sun was just making its way over the peaks and into the Meadows was peaceful, astonishing and took only a few seconds to remind me why I come here. The grass is now brown, the few leaves left are a golden yellow and this early in the morning there is frost on the ground. The permit station is open but the camp grounds, store, gas station and Information Center are all closed up for the oncoming winter. A calm has seemed to settle over an area that for the past few months has been visited by millions of people. Even this time of year there is a bit of traffic on Tioga road but one look tells me that almost all of them are people who wont be getting more than 100 yards from their vehicle at any point today, or for most of the remaining portions of their lives for that matter. I stopped to take a few photos of a falcon who didn’t really seem to mind me invading his space or interrupting his morning hunt, in the background the Cathedral Range towered up into the skyline. I have been fascinated with this range since first laying eyes on it a couple years ago, and a portion of it was finally my destination today. Geared up, packed, fed, sunscreened and properly caffeinated I left the van and started up the trail to Cathedral Pass around 9, ok maybe closer to 10. The first mile of this trail should sufficiently weed out any wanna-be hikers, but eventually it levels out a bit and is a nice 3 mile hike through the woods up to Cathedral lake. The lake itself is a half mile side trip from the main trail, across a meadow to a large flat rock area at the edge of the lake. Its definitely worth the trip to walk around to the other side of the lake for the view of Tenaya Lake about 1000' below, and the views back to the east of Cathedral lake and the peak are spectacular.
The hike up to Cathedral Pass is a great trail that winds through forest, across meadows and by the upper Cathedral Lake. Once over the pass I continued through another meadow between Tressider Peak and Echo Peaks up to a rock knoll just east of Columbia Finger. From here I had outstanding views of The Matthes Crest, Echo Valley, Quartzite Peak and Mt. Clark to the south. Farther east revealed Mt. Florence at over 12,500' and in the distance beyond that glimpses of Lyell Glacier could be seen. Such an amazing place, a whole lot of country to be explored someday when I am here for more than a weekend.
But the snows will be here soon, the road over Tioga Pass and through Toulumne Meadows will eventually close and this part of the park will rest under its winter blanket for a few months. The spring melt and run off will replenish the lakes, the wild flowers will bloom again and the streams will wash away all the footprints left from this year and the cycle can begin all over again, I’ll be there.

camping and fishing around Tuolumne Meadows?

hello everybody. i'm planning on going up to tuolumne meadows this weekend for some flyfishing. i'll bring my backpacking stuff since i hope to camp somewhere near the meadows. i'm wondering... what are the rules for campsites in regards to locating them? i thought i read somewhere that you must travel a certain distance before making camp. i'll be using my whisperlite and there'll be only two of us, with wilderness permit in hand (hopefully).

i'm going to hang out along the lyell fork one day and hope to check out the downstream section of the river from the main meadows area on day two. my plan is to make camp somewhere between TM and glen aulin. i might not even go past the halfway point. can i just make a camp anywhere away from the water and trail if i find a secluded space?

thanks. sorry if i sound inexperienced. i've never really camped in what might be considered a very heavily used area like tuolumne meadows.

Solo Trip 6-5,6

I was able to get away to Yosemite last weekend for a couple days of solo backpacking on the north side of the valley. It was the first opportunity Ive had to test a few pieces of new gear that Ive aquired over the winter.
Tuolumne Meadows are pretty snow free and the store is now open as is the Ranger station where you get wilderness permits, 8 to 5 for now but 7:30 to 6:00 in a couple weeks. The TM visitors center isnt open yet. YARTS is also up and running its full schedule.
My trip began at the Porcupine Cr Trailhead @ Tioga Road, down to Indian Rock and some great vantage points for Clouds Rest and Half Dome. Continueing on to North Dome is where I ran into the most people, mainly just dayhikers and not really as many as I anticipated. From there I headed down, around and then back up to the ledge above Yosemite Pt. I made camp here, probably closer to the edge than the rangers would have liked me to but I didnt see one to ask. A couple deer came by at dinner but fortunatley no bears.
Sitting on a slab of granite with your feet hanging off of a 3000' edge, cup of coffee in hand, watching the sun come up over one of mother natures most magnificent masterpieces.... such an awe inspirering place, especially if you can get away from the crowds and find a little spot all to yourself even if only for a while, amazing.
I burned up another roll of film, packed up camp and hiked back to Tioga Road via another route, a very healthy workout as 36 hours later my calves are still sore, but all very well worth it and I cant wait to go again. I will post future trips, probably at northernsierraoutdoors tribe, this trip like I said was a test of some gear and myself as well, and everything seemed to work just fine.

Former Curry Company Employees?

I worked for Yosemite park & Curry Company in the summers of '91 and '92. I was a "guide/packer" which was a trail guide and mule packer for the Valley Stables. (Apologies to anyone who ever got stuck behind us...).
I took people on tours of the valley, up to Taft Point, Glacier Point and Half Dome. The packing part was leading a mule train up to Merced Lake. We delivers mail, laundry, food and Flame-o's to the high camps, then packed out all the reply mail, garbage, etc.
I had an amazing time- worked my ass off and met a lot of really cool (some not so cool) folks.
Anyone have any stories to share?

Hi, I am new to this tribe but I just wanted to say that I have been coming to Yosemite since I was 15 years old. My first snow ski trip was to Badger Pass with my North Hollywood High School Ski Club. I was even married (but now divorced) at the Church in the Valley Floor. I contribute every year to the Yosemite Fund. I have a very strong desire to peserve Yosemite for all of us to enjoy for many years to come.

Take care,

Can anyone tell me when we can expect the highway from Lee Vining up to the park to open up? When has it opened on previous years?

I was fortunate to visit Yosemite for the first time last Sept. on a spontanious weekend trip, a weekend I shall never forget. My introduction to the valley came at daybreak as a small group of us climbed the 4 mile trail leaving the valley floor just as it was getting light- spectacular. Probably the single most awe inspireing morning I have ever had, and I am from Alaska. Buy the time I reached Glacier Point I had lost the others in the group and burned up a roll and a half of film and hadnt even noticed I just climbed '3000 ft. - All well worth it. I too imediatly tried to figure out how to work there at least in the summers but, no go, for now I will have to settle for long weekends and vacations I guess.
There are several 'want-to-do' hikes and climbs within the park so hopefully in time I can tap into the knowledge of some of you veterans of Yosemite or even find a hiking partner or two from within the tribe, Thanks,
Daniel

Went backpacking there in the end of Sept. Hitchhiked from the valley to Cathedral Lake trail head, after the lake on to Long Meadow, Sunrise Lakes, Clouds Rest down to LYV and, yes, down the mist trail with a full pack. Quick and fun however exchanged words with a lady yaping on a cell phone on the trail down to LYV. Highlight - spent the night just below Clouds Rest and got up on top first thing in the morning. Very cool.
