I'm interested in doing some camping in Yosemite in late spring or early summer.
Which campgrounds would you recommend, and why?. I plan to stay for several days, so anything with
good access to trails, showers, and bathrooms would be nice. But perhaps I would like to do some overnight hikes
and stay in the more secluded camp areas too.

Re: Camping in Yosemite.
Thu, March 29, 2007 - 11:14 PMThe Valley is a very condensed space, so most of the campgrounds have similar access to trails and showers. There is a free loop shuttle to get around the Valley.
Are you tent camping? I would recommend Camp 4 if you are, the other campgrounds on the Valley floor are always chock-full of RVs. Camp 4 doesn't allow them. There are no showers in the campground, but it's a walk or a shuttle ride to Housekeeping Camp where you can pay for a shower (and do laundry).
If you wait until the Tioga Road is open, I'd highly recommend camping in Tuolomne Meadows. It's much more laid-back up in the Meadows than on the Valley floor... it's easier to feel removed from civilization.
Have a nice trip. -

Re: Camping in Yosemite.
Fri, March 30, 2007 - 1:20 AMTent camping is exactly what I'm interested in, that and backpacking. So Tuolomne Meadows sounds like something I need
to look into. I want to explore the Yosemite that most Valley tourists don't get to see from a short hike. -

Fri, March 30, 2007 - 6:35 PMTuolomne is amazing. Lots of sweet backpacking, and trips that can get you to the rim of the Valley so you can watch the madness below without having to be in it.
Tuolomne Meadows Campground is HUUUUGE. There are a few loops that do not allow RVs... camp in one of those! -

Fri, April 6, 2007 - 9:50 PMThanks. If I'm not mistaken, I shouldn't need reservations for camping in Tuolomne? It should be considered backcountry? -

Re: Camping in Yosemite.
Fri, April 6, 2007 - 10:26 PMBased on the research and trip I have planned in July... you are mistaken.
Tuolumne Meadows is sold out for most of the dates I checked in July (sold out in an hour)!
However, from there you can get a wilderness permit (also limited in numbers per day) and tent camp out in the wilderness.
Now... does anyone know a motel/hotel/Inn near the enterance that my kids and I could stay in the night before we pick up the permit? You have to pick those up by 10 AM! -

Re: Camping in Yosemite.
Mon, April 30, 2007 - 1:55 PMMake sure you camp early in the season. August/September are too late in the season. it is hot and dry. You do not get the full beauty of this majectic land during that time. Happy trails -

Re: Camping in Yosemite.
Mon, April 30, 2007 - 2:53 PMEhhhh...
I am not so sure about that...
The temps at night are usually in the 30's in late August and September.
Another problem of the early season are mosquitos...
