Yosemite in the snow

Are trails accessible when there is snow on them or does the park close them? I've snowshoed in the Sequoia Nat'l Park but wonder about Yosemite since there are more tourists there.

All the valley trails are open all winter long unless, of course, there is a major snowstorm. There are certain valley trails that parts of are closed for the most part, such as the upper part of Vernal Falls - the Mist Trail - because it gets too icy. Though you can chance it if you want anyway. I think even the trails up to Glacier Point and the top of Yosemite Falls stay open all winter. I don't know about backcountry stuff.

I've heard it's pretty cool to cross country ski in to Glacier Point. It's on my agenda for this winter.

Glacier Point by xc ski is a fun trip... 10 miles one way from the trailhead, but pretty much a walk in the park. Do you plan to snow camp at Glacier Point, or do the 20 mile round trip ski in a day? There are a couple other options to snow camping though. The Yosemite Mountaineering School takes guided tours to GP and puts you up in a wonderful lodge right there at the point. It's riduculously expensive though. A better opetion might be to look into the Yosemite Cross Country Ski Club, a smaller group under the auspices of the Yosemite Winter Club. The YXCWC has a couple of trips out to the Glacier Point each winter. Food is cached in one of the ranger cabins just before the road closes for the winter, and the park service allows the club to use the cabin for lodging on the overnighters. A very affordable option.

The YXCWC has several other annual winter trips too. Ostrander Ski Hut is an all time favorite. They also have an annual Trans Sierra Ski trip that starts off with a flight from the west side to Lee Vining, and return by ski over Tioga Pass road and down into Yosemite Valley. That trip can be heaven or hell depending on the weather conditions (and trip participants). I've known both. If the YXCWC is of interest, you can get more information through: www.yosemitewinterclub.com/clubhome.htm I was a member of the club for a good number of years, and enjoyed the heck out of it. Now i'm exploring Alaska.
